my mission

Henry Newman wrote a favorite prayer of mine which stays nestled on the kitchen-sink windowsill, where my eyes can skim playfully over the words daily, like fingers gliding across piano keys.

Which I must admit then – oft times – seem to pick themselves up from their print, to flamboyantly dance across my heart!

“The Mission of My Life”

Blessed John Henry Newman

(1801-1890)

God has created me to do Him some definite service.  He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another.  I have a mission.  I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next.  I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons.  He has not created me for naught.  I shall do good; I shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it if I do but keep His commandments.  Therefore, I will trust Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away.  If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him.  He does nothing in vain.  He knows what He is about.  He may take away my friends.  He may throw me among strangers.  He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me.  Still, He knows what He is about.

Amen.

At times it is prayed as a waltzing wistful twirl with a voice inside me who speaks as a whisper; while still, at other moments, it knows a hard-stomp hip-hop accompanied by screams aching to be spoken.

And yet no matter the delivery,

no matter the joy or pain behind my eyes,

no matter the choregraphed dance of the day,

it is always heard by a God who loves me...and seeks to use me, to do His will.

“Won’t you please pray along & dance with me, too?”

hugs n’ blessings for all the whispers & shouts

He will hear today, when you do!

  1. What a wonderful post and what a glorious memory of a man who truly has transformed generations still by his writings etc. The Pen is mightier than the SWORD….A pen used to honor the God who LOVES US. (A mighty sword to cut through darkness and bring His Light). Thank you and bless you. I too will now dance. With Him, Unto Him and in gratitude for life. Thank you.
